I have to say that I am a complete sucker for champagne. I have a girlfriend who lived in France for four years and learned to cook there. She became obsessed with champagne, and when her family befriended our family, I became a champagne "apprentice" of sorts. I learned the basics: it's only called champagne it's from the Champagne region of France (all others are sparkling wines), chill it in the freezer before serving, stop it up with a champagne stopper between servings, and it really goes well with just about anything. Having a girls' night? Grab Thai food from Kop Chai in Camas and Cristalino (a very economical, decent sparkling wine you can get anywhere) Brunch with family? Argyle sparkling wine from Oregon ( a great $12 bottle) mixed with orange juice (mimosa galore!) with eggs and french toast. Evening with the hub to celebrate a big event? Veuve Cliquot (orange label, a bit spendy) with strawberries and chocolate. I think I Iove it because it's such a celebratory thing--so festive, bubbly and FUN. So fun that champagne bars are popping up all over in big cities--including Portland. My favorite lunch activity is listening to the fabulous ladies at Piccolo Paradiso cafe in Camas as they talk about traveling, sipping on some Persecco, a wonderful Italian sparkling wine that she serves. Salut!
